suminat 50 Before Breakfast finds Wilson alone on the stage, but for a shadowy male figure behind a curtain who remains a silent auditor of her furious monologue on his failings. In a beautifully calibrated crescendo from querulous to agonised, Wilson unfolds the story of a mismatched couple. She, a pretty poor girl impregnated by a Harvard graduate with literary pretensions, works as a seamstress to support him. He, cast off by his wealthy family, hangs out with his fellow Bohemians and – as she discovers while simultaneously preparing breakfast, screeching reproaches and searching his jacket pockets – runs around with other girls.
